FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe girls cross country team finished seventh at the Badger South Conference meet Saturday.

"The course consisted of some tough rolling hills, the competition was top notch and for one reason or another, we just didn't have it," Monroe girls cross country coach Brian Jefferson said. "I know this is the standard line for coaches whose team doesn't do well but, we are better than we showed Saturday. This group of girls has worked extremely hard all season and for us to finish where we did is a great disappointment to all of us. To go from third in 2009 to seventh in 2010 with almost the same team is quite the anomaly.

Monroe sophomore Abby Rogerson led the Cheesemakers finishing 14th, running the 4,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 57 seconds and earned second team all-conference honors. Monroe freshman Nicole Witt took 30th (17:44) and freshman Therese Hughes was 35th (17:57).

Madison Edgewood edged Oregon 45-49 for the conference championship. Monroe junior Chelsea Haffele finished 37th (18:03) and senior Rachel Rogerson was 42nd (18:35). The Cheesemakers now are focused on the WIAA Division 2 Platteville sectional.

"We are going to do our best to regroup and run a stronger race on in Platteville," Jefferson said. "I think and hope these girls feel that they have something to prove. They are a good strong team."
