Monroe boys tennis team drops 3 matches

MADISON - The Monroe boys tennis team opened the season dropping three dual matches Saturday at the Madison Memorial Invitational.

Madison Memorial and Cotter High School, Minnesota, defeated Monroe 7-0. Madison West knocked off the Cheesemakers 6-1.

The lone set won by the Cheesemakers came from Monroe junior Silas Setterstrom at No. 1 singles. Setterstrom defeated Madison West's Alex Poland 6-2, 6-2. In other matches, he lost to Madison Memorial's Colt Tegtmeier 6-0, 6-0 and lost to Cotter's Ryan Ortega 6-1, 6-1.

"It made them realize what we have to work hard on in practice," Monroe coach Ashley Hermanson said. "It will make them focus on match play so we can get to that level. I told them not everyone will be this good. I told them if they keep working they can get to that level."

At No. 2 singles, Monroe junior Ryan Peterson lost to Cotter's Tim Demarais 6-0, 6-0 and Madison West's Andrew Glasgow 6-1, 6-0. Madison Memorial's Sacha Manoury knocked off Peterson 6-0, 6-1.

Monroe sophomore Quinn Sulejmani at No. 3 singles also dropped three matches. Madison Memorial's Saager Ranade defeated Sulejmani 6-0, 6-0. Cotter's Jerry Yang beat Sulejmani 6-0, 6-2 and Madison West's Quinlan Gallagher defeated him 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 4 singles, Madison Memorial's Akhil Thandasery defeated Monroe's Ben Dombowski 6-0, 6-0. Cotter's Matt Besek defeated Dombowski 6-0, 6-0 and Madison West's Theodore Scheckel beat him 6-0, 6-0.

Each of the Cheesemakers' doubles teams lost three matches. Madison West's Matt Munns and Cameron Carlson at No. 1 doubles defeated Monroe's Kody Althaus and Tanner Purdy 6-1, 6-0. The Cheesemakers top duo lost to Cotter's Jake Renk and Brennen Shaftner 6-2, 6-4. Madison Memorial's Alessandro Puglielli and Zeke Vredenbregt defeated Althaus and Purdy 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 2 doubles, Madison Memorial's Lorenzo Puglielli and Anurag Sandireddy beat the Cheesemakers' Brett Lyne and Ryan Stoneback 6-1, 6-4. Madison West's Michael Wolter and Luca Willauer defeated Lyne and Stoneback 6-0, 6-0. Cotter's Michael Deny and Logan Spitzer knocked off Lyne and Stoneback 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Madison West's Ezra Carre and Nicky Paulson defeated Monroe's Zeke Frankford and Andrew Johnson 6-0, 6-0. Cotter's Daniel Cardenas and Moo Jung cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Monroe duo. Madison Memorial's Matt Soley and Theo Green defeated Frankford and Johnson 6-0, 6-0.

Monroe hosts Reedsburg on Tuesday before playing at Jefferson on Friday. The Cheesemakers have two matches before their first Badger South Conference match at Stoughton April 19.

"I would like them to get a few more individual match wins under their belt before conference," Hermanson said.
