Honoring the champs

MONROE - Monroe High School will honor its 2007 state championship boys basketball team on Thursday during halftime of the Cheesemakers' game against Darlington.
Monroe defeated Port Washington 52-46 to win the WIAA Division 2 state title. Brett Stangel scored a game-high 23 points in the title game after scoring 33 in a 70-62 semifinals win against Seymour.
MONONA - This overtime stuff is getting old for the Monroe boys basketball team.
For the second time in as many games, the Cheesemakers lost a heartbreaker. This time, it was Monona Grove's sterling foul shooting in the extra session that produced a 52-46 victory Tuesday night.
Monroe (3-3, 1-3 Badger South) lost its third straight game, including a 49-48 overtime decision to visiting Stoughton on Saturday night.
Monona Grove (2-5, 1-4 Badger South) snapped a five- game losing streak.
The Silver Eagles outscored the Cheesemakers 14-8 in overtime, when MG's Brett Percy scored seven of his 14 points.
The Silver Eagles made 11 of 12 free throws in overtime and finished 15 of 18 at the line. Monroe was 13 of 22.
Monroe junior Alex Barenklau scored a team-high 12 points. Senior Bryce Messerli had nine points and sophomore Jake Hirsbrunner added eight.
The Silver Eagles led 19-15 at halftime and outscored the Cheesemakers 15-9 in the third quarter to take a 10-point lead. Monroe used a 14-4 spurt in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
The Cheesemakers host Darlington in a non-conference game on Thursday.
