MONTICELLO — The Ponies went to the line twice as many times as the Warriors, leading to a 52-49 Six Rivers East Conference victory on Monday, Feb. 13.
“Foul trouble hurt us in the long stretch,” Black Hawk head coach Trent Wyssbrod said. “They always says free throws win games, and that is how we got beat. Monticello got to the line more and made more.”
With just under five minutes left in the game, the Warriors had a five-point lead. The Ponies closed the game on an 11-3 run, though, with eight of those points from Jackson Eyler.
He led Monticello with 21 points and six rebounds. Peyton Smith and Ryer Indergand also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Andrew Figi paced Black Hawk with 23 points, followed by Lucas Milz with 17. Seth Dunlavey was one point away from a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds with nine points.
MONTICELLO 53, PECATONICA 49
MONTICELLO — The Ponies picked up their second conference win of the week on Tuesday, Feb. 14 with a 3-pointer from Eyler. Monticello overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half to pull out the victory.
Eyler and Indergand scored in double figures with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Indergand also led on the boards with six rebounds.
Tyler McKeon tallied 19 points, as one of two Vikings to score in the first half. Jameson Johnson trailed with 14 points, all of which came in the second half. Evan Dochnal paced Pecatonica with nine rebounds.
BLACK HAWK 54, ARGYLE 41
SOUTH WAYNE — Sophomore Eli Schliem stepped up in a big way, aiding the Warriors in their upset over the Orioles on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
“It was a big win for us as we get close to the end of the year,” Wyssbrod said. “Eli Schliem stepped up and had a career-high 16 points, and we held a good shooting team to 41 points.”
Schliem scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half, including a pair of threes. Figi trailed with 15 points, while Milz tallied 10. Will Helfvogt was the only player in double figures for Argyle, recording 16 points.
ARGYLE 54, ALBANY 28
ALBANY — The Comets had a 17-14 lead midway through the first half, but the Orioles went on a 15-7 run. In the second half, Albany mustered just six points compared to Argyle’s 25.
Helfvogt paced Argyle with 18 points and eight rebounds, shooting 50% from beyond the arc. Caden Stoeger also scored in double figures with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Mason McNett was the third Oriole to score in double digits with 10 points.
Drew Sertle led Albany with 11 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc. All six of Brayden Bakken’s points came from threes. On the boards, James Schwartz grabbed eight rebounds.
ALBANY 46, JUDA 33
JUDA — After scoring the first two points of the game, the Panthers went on to drop a conference game on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Jayden Brown tallied 14 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc. Blake Adkins scored in double figures, too, with 10 points. Meanwhile, Hunter Foster grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
Nate Stokstad led Albany with 12 points, while Schwartz was one rebound away from a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. The Comets shots 100% at the free-throw line with contributions from Bakken, Sertle, Schwartz and Stokstad.
BELLEVILLE 65, NEW GLARUS 52
NEW GLARUS — AC Strok did everything in his power to give the Knights a conference victory and keep their championship hopes alive, but New Glarus fell short on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Strok was the only player in double figures with 20 points. He and Max Marty got to the line, where they shot 100%. The Knights hit three 3-pointers, with one each from Breckyn Thompson, Ethan Friedrich and Strok.
BRODHEAD 83, CLINTON 63
BRODHEAD — The Cardinals jumped the Cougars in the Rock Valley Conference standings with their win on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Jaxon Dooley and Cullen Walker provided half of the offense, as they scored 22 and 21 points, respectively. Sam Searls and Brody Riese sank three shots from beyond the arc each in their nine- and 12-point totals.
EVANSVILLE 76, BRODHEAD 61
BRODHEAD — Gabe Bockhop recorded a season-high 17 points with three 3-pointers in the Cardinals’ conference loss on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Dooley was the second highest scorer with 11 points, going 4-for-7 from the charity stripe, while Walker tallied 10 points.
