MONROE — In its last year of the Badger Conference, Monroe looks to leave an impression and improve upon its 1-10 conference record from a season ago.

“This is our final season in the Badger Conference,” Monroe head coach Hannah Ormson said. “Our goals for this season are to tighten up some scores compared to last year. We want to be more competitive defensively when playing schools that are much larger and have year-long training.”

Badger West  2022 Standings

Oregon 14 points; 7-0-0; 23-0-1

Edgewood 12 points; 6-1-0; 16-3-1

Sauk Prairie 10 points; 5-2-0; 16-7-1

Mount Horeb 8 points; 4-3-0; 8-8-1

Baraboo 6 points; 3-4-0; 6-11-1

Reedsburg 4 points; 2-5-0; 8-10-1

Monroe 2 points; 1-6-0; 2-14-1

Portage-Poynette 0 points; 0-7-0; 1-17-0

After losing most of her leadership to graduation, Ormson will look to Honorable Mention All-Conference senior Atziri Ocampo to guide the Cheesemakers. Ocampo has committed to Madison College and signed her letter of intent on Feb. 21. Goalkeeper Kaelyn Welch has also toured some colleges in her recruiting process.

“We lost a lot of seniors last year, including most of our leadership on the defensive line,” Ormson said. “We are looking for younger players to step up this year into leadership roles.”

Ormson sees a slew of incoming players making an impact on the varsity and hopes to have the numbers to field a JV team for the second straight season.

“We will be calling on girls to play a high level of varsity soccer who do not have a lot of experience compared to the competition we are facing,” Ormson said. “This will be a challenge for many girls, but I believe they will rise to it.”

Perhaps the toughest competition in the conference will be Oregon, which posted a 23-0-1 overall record last season as the Division 2 State Champions.
