Brodhead runners-up to D5 No. 5 Mineral Point

BRODHEAD — Brodhead volleyball hosted nine other teams in its annual volleyball invite on Saturday, Sept. 7. Teams varied from Division 2 down to Division 5, from the Rock Valley, Capitol, Trailways, Six Rivers and SWAL conferences. Mineral Point, ranked No. 5 in Division 4, won the entire tournament, going 6-0.

Each team had four pool play games before splitting into either the gold or silver bracket. The top three teams in each pool advanced to the gold bracket, and the bottom two in each pool qualified for the silver bracket.

Brodhead, who was the top team in Pool A with a 4–0 record, fell to Mineral Point in the championship 25-10, 25-20. Turner edged Evansville in three sets — 25-19, 18-25, 15-11 — for third place.

New Glarus, who was tied for second in Pool A with Parkview and Monroe, finished fifth in the gold bracket. 

Monticello, who’s only win in pool play was against Juda, won the silver bracket. The Ponies beat out Monroe 25-17, 25-17 in the championship game.

After going 0-4 in pool play, Albany picked up its first win of the tournament over Juda in the consolation portion of the silver bracket. Juda, on the other hand, was without a win in the entire tournament.

RIVER VALLEY TOURNAMENT

SPRING GREEN — Pecatonica and Argyle participated in the River Valley tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7. 

The Orioles went 3-2 with wins over Pecatonica, Coulee Christian and River Valley. They fell to Brookwood and East Troy. Four players had big weekends. Kylie Butler registered 49 kills, 39 digs, 12 aces and a block. Brooke Wellnitz tallied 39 kills, 48 digs, eight aces and five blocks. Mya McNett distributed the offense with 67 assists, along with 24 digs and two blocks. Brynn Harris dug out 28 balls and served five aces.

Other reported scores show Pecatonica beat Brookwood in three sets.
