LENA - The Monroe High School wrestling team racked up four pins but lost its season-opening dual match to Lena-Winslow 51-24 Thursday.

The Cheesemakers got pins from freshman Dakota Wickstrum (106 pounds), sophomore Gabe Witt (113), junior Dempzy Foley (170) and senior Hayden Arneson (195).

"Lena-Winslow is a very good team with a lineup full of juniors and seniors," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "They are a veteran team. It's good for us to see that competition. It gives us a barometer for what we need to improve on. I don't think the kids thought we were in as good of shape as we thought we were."

Wickstrum pinned Lena-Winslow's Sarah Nicholas in 50 seconds, Gabe Witt pinned freshman Chris Hicks in 3 minutes, 36 seconds, Foley pinned Rahbeon Valentine in 3:33 and Arneson pinned Brock Goebli in 3:07.

Two other matches came down to the wire.

Lena-Winslow's Jermiah Herman scored on a takedown in overtime to edge Monroe senior Cole Murray 8-6 at 138 pounds. Murray led 6-4 late in the third period, but Herman tied the match at 6 on a reversal in the final 15 seconds to force the extra session.

"Conditioning kind of caught up to Cole a little bit," Tom Witt said.

Lena-Winslow's Elijah Rowe defeated Monroe senior Isaac Allen 2-0 at 182.

"He's still coming back from that injury," Tom Witt said of Allen who suffered a calf injury at the end of the football season.
