SOUTH WAYNE - It came down to the wire and Darlington senior Michael Sinclair delivered.
Sinclair at 126 pounds pulled out a 14-8 win against Black Hawk and the Redbirds knocked off the Warriors 42-33 in a non-conference dual Tuesday night.
"We haven't won a whole bunch of duals this season," Darlington coach Tom Mathias said. "It was one I thought we could win. We had to basically not get pinned. He got caught on his back and everyone was on the edge of their seat."
The Redbirds also got wins from seniors Scott McDaniel (152), Richie Ubersox (195) and sophomore heavyweight Hayden Black.
Black Hawk forfeited four weight classes - 132, 138, 160 and 170. The Redbirds forfeited at 106 and 113.
Mathias is looking for the Redbirds to build some momentum since this is the first of seven dual matches this week. Darlington hosts Fennimore on Friday and then wrestles at the Belmont Duals on Saturday.
Dodgeville 51, Pecatonica-Argyle 18
BLANCHARDVILLE - There wasn't much of a home mat advantage as Dodgeville overpowered the Vikings.
Pecatonica-Argyle forfeited six weight classes. The Vikings won three matches against the Dodgers. Pecatonica-Argyle's Jeremiah Tollakson (145) pinned Dodgeville's Cody Degenhardt in 4 minutes, 35 seconds and Pecatonica-Argyle's Nick Gilbertson (heavyweight) pinned Taran Mortimer in 1:50.
Ben Meyer (220) also received a win via forfeit. Pecatonica-Argyle freshman Tristan Rosenstiel lost a heartbreaker 8-7 at 152 pounds to Brett Binsfeld.
Sugar River 54, Columbus 21
COLUMBUS - The Sugar River Raiders closed out their dual meet with Columbus with four straight pins to capture a 54-21 win in a Capitol Conference match Tuesday.
Pins by sophomore A.J.Helbach at 220 pounds and freshman Kody Popenfus at 113 pounds along with a pair of forfeits gave the Raiders a 24-0 lead. At 126 pounds, Tyler Deshon scored a pin in 1:28 over Darrio Mazzei of Columbus to give the Raiders a 30-3 lead, but the Cardinals roared back with a medical forfeit and two pins to get within 30-21. The Raiders responded with pins by senior Brooks Hendrickson (152 pounds), senior Andrew Fink (160), sophomore Abert Everson (170), and David Jelle (182) to finish off the Cardinals.
Sugar River will host Pecatonica-Argyle in their next dual meet Tuesday.
Brodhead-Juda 45, Clinton 24
BRODHEAD - Forfeits helped Brodhead-Juda race to a 30-0 lead and turn back a rally by the Clinton Cougars in a 45-24 win that clinched the Rock Valley South championship.
The action began at 195 pounds with sophomore Tyler Davis getting a win in overtime and freshman Steven Voights winning a 6-4 decision over Clinton's Phil Waite at 220 pounds. Brodhead-Juda freshman Logan Mauer (285 pounds) got a pin over Duncan Dessing in 1:11 to give the Cardinals a 12-0 lead. After three straight forfeits at 106, 113, and 120 pounds, Brodhead-Juda led 30-0, but the Cougars charged back.
The Cougars won by decision at 126 pounds, followed by pins at 132, 138, and 145 pounds. Another decision for the Cougars at 152 pounds made the score 30-24, but Brodhead-Juda junior Kramer Lewis won in overtime over Clinton's Nate McConnell 4-2 and that was followed with forfeits at 170 pounds and 182 pounds to give Brodhead-Juda the victory.
Brodhead-Juda will compete in the Deforest Invitational Jan. 21.
