Argyle boys basketball tips Warren

WARREN - The Argyle boys basketball team held off a last-minute scoring attempt, forcing overtime, and rode the momentum to a 54-45 win over Warren on Monday.

Tied 42-42 with under a minute to go in the game, Warren held their last shot for several seconds. The Orioles didn't allow the Blue Devils to score, though, and Argyle coach Michael Cassidy said the stop gave his team momentum going into the overtime period.

"I told them 'if you defend it we'll put ourselves into an oppotunity,' and we played well in overtime," Cassidy said.

Junior Alec Treuthardt led the way for the Orioles with 17 points, and junior Christopher Severson added 16.

Treuthardt fouled out in overtime, forcing the younger players to step up. Cassidy said he was happy to see them meet the challenge.

"The young guys really stepped up. They had to," Cassidy said. "They all played really well in overtime, and they played tough."

After going into the fourth quarter with a 33-24 lead, the Orioles were outscored 18-9 in the frame. However, after the big defensive stop and a 12-3 overtime run, the Orioles emerged with what Cassidy said is a big win.

"We're so young. I just want the kids to get better," he said. "It's good to know that they can win a close game."

Argyle will host Juda Thursday, to open up Six Rivers play.

"Juda's well coached, and they've got some good players," he said. "But I feel good going into Juda with a win under our belt."
