MONROE — Wednesday, June 15, 2022 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. On and around this day, communities in the USA and all over the world will sponsor events to highlight solutions to this systemic social challenge.
The Green County Elder Abuse Prevention (EAP) I-Team proudly sponsors a coloring page contest for local 5th, 6th, and/or 7th graders in the county to participate in this national conversation, with the 1st and 2nd place winners receiving gift baskets with items donated from the community. The Green County I-Team also puts together a banner and pinwheel display outside of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce & Industry Building from mid-May through June 15, to bring awareness to the community regarding elder abuse. This year they will host a booth at the Monroe Farmer’s Market on the Saturday prior, June 11, with activities, prizes, and information.
Green County had 213 total cases of reported elder abuse or neglect in 2021. That is at least one case reported every day, or just over 3% of persons 65+ in Green County, who experienced some form of abuse or neglect in 2021 alone.
