No stimulus for bridge work

MONROE - Green County has been turned down for federal stimulus money to help pay for road and bridge repairs.

Green County Highway Commissioner Dallas Cecil told the Highway Committee on Monday that he received a letter last week from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation that said the county wouldn't receive any of the stimulus payout.

In April, the Highway Department applied for about $2 million to rehabilitate or construct six bridges, Cecil said.

None of the projects were ready for construction, Cecil said; the engineering work for the projects still needed to be done.

The lack of engineering likely was the reason the county did not receive any federal money for the projects, Cecil said.

The six bridges are located on County E, north of Albany; County F, east of Brodhead; County K; in Cadiz township on Ullom Road; County D; and on Poplar Grove Road. All of the bridges were in the county's four-year bridge repair program. They would have been repaired in 2011 and 2012.

For work done on county maintained roads, Green County pays for 20 percent of bridge and road repairs, while the state pays the other 80 percent. If work is done on a township road, the county and township each pay 10 percent. Green County still will receive its percentage of state aid for the bridge projects, Cecil said.

The Highway Department still holds out hope for stimulus money for other things, he said. The county hasn't received information about stimulus money asked for to help purchase five new patrol trucks.

Cecil said some of the stimulus money is meant to help reduce diesel fuel emissions from older trucks. The newer diesel engines run cleaner, he said.

The federal government will pay up to 25 percent of the cost of a new patrol truck if the engine from the old truck is damaged beyond repair.

Cecil didn't know when the county would learn if its application for the trucks was accepted or rejected.
