MONROE - Monroe City Hall is closed for the rest of today after a fire was reported in the basement there at about 12:55 p.m. Wednesday.

Employees were evacuated, and allowed to return into the building at about 1:20 p.m. to get their belongings. City Hall will be closed for business the rest of Wednesday because of smoke in the lower level, Monroe Mayor Ron Marsh said. Marsh said he expected City Hall to reopen Thursday.
