MONROE — A man flown by medical helicopter to a Madison hospital from the scene of a one-vehicle crash near Belleville early Saturday was driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

Richard A. Legler, 52, Oregon, was listed in good condition at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison as of Monday morning, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The accident happened at about 1:40 a.m. Saturday in the N8300 block of County X, Town of Exeter, the sheriff’s office reported. Legler was westbound when he lost control on a curve to the north, crossed the center line and went off the road. The vehicle collided with several trees before coming to rest.

Legler reported wearing a seatbelt. His airbags deployed, and the vehicle was towed with disabling damage.

Legler was arrested on a first-offense charge of operating while under the influence of alcohol and released pending court. He was also cited for driving too fast for conditions and operating left of center. Belleville police, firefighters and EMS assisted deputies on scene.
