MONROE - A Monticello man was arrested Saturday morning for hit-and-run and felony driving while intoxicated, his fifth offense.

Gary J. Wirth, 36, was stopped by Green County sheriff's deputies for speeding on Wisconsin 69 at Cold Springs Road, Town of Monroe, and his vehicle appeared to have been in an accident. Investigation revealed that the damage was caused by a hit-and-run crash that occurred at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, at the intersection of County C and Koller Circle, Town of Washington.

Wirth told deputies he was driving eastbound on Koller Circle when he lost control, drove into the ditch and hit a "warning: curve ahead" traffic sign and then hit a TDS utility box severing the fiber optic cables. Wirth allegedly fled the scene and failed to report the crash. Wirth was uninjured in the accident and his vehicle sustained moderate damage.

Wirth was also cited for driving with a cracked windshield. He was jailed pending court.

Online court records show Wirth was convicted of DWI in June 2002, February 2005 and August 2010.
