MONROE - The Green County Sheriff's Department announced Tuesday it plans to step up enforcement over St. Patrick's Day.
Deputies will intensify traffic safety enforcement from March 4 to March 20 to combat drunk driving and increase seatbelt use.
The stepped-up enforcement is part of a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Safety.
"During the St. Patrick's Day mobilization and throughout the year, we are striving to prevent motorists from killing and injuring themselves and others on our roadways," Lt. Karalee Phillips said in the news release.
Voluntary compliance, not more citations and arrests, is the goal of the mobilization, according to Phillips.
"We will take enforcement action if voluntary compliance fails. We are serious about traffic safety enforcement because far too many needless deaths and serious injuries are due to drunken driving and not wearing safety belts," Phillips said. "Our goal is to reduce preventable traffic deaths to zero in Wisconsin, because even one preventable traffic fatality is one too many."
