MONROE/BLANCHARDVILLE - After a long and frustrating battle with Alzheimer's, Iona Ott, age 86, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of her home on Monday June 8, 2015.
She was born November 1, 1928 in York Township in Green County Wisconsin. The daughter of Thorval and Mary (Schiesser) Vamstad. She married Eldon Ott on October 2, 1948 at York Memorial Lutheran Church in rural Blanchardville. She worked alongside her husband, making cheese at River Forks Cheese Factory in rural Hollandale before the family moved to Monroe in 1972. Once in Monroe Iona, enjoyed raising her family and being a homemaker. She became involved in numerous circles at St. John's United Church of Christ and taught Sunday School there for many years, while her children grew up. Once her children had grown and moved out of the house, Iona took a job in the Orders Department at Swiss Colony and enjoyed playing bridge, weekly. When Eldon retired from making cheese, they volunteered together delivering Meals on Wheels for Green County Human Services. Iona's loving, and loyal dog, Dollie, was faithfully by Iona's side through life's ups and downs, and would not let her go unescorted to her heavenly home; Dollie faithfully followed Iona to her last moments on the earth, and straight through to her heavenly home, as well, on June 8, 2015. Dollie devoted
17 1/2 years to being a loyal and faithful companion to Iona, and her husband Eldon. "My little dog - a heartbeat at my feet." Edith Wharton.
Iona is survived by her two sons James (Anne) Ott of Madison and Thomas Ott (Dawn Lybarger) of Monroe, four Grandchildren: Emily Weisensel, Vincent, Cody and Alisha Ott and a newborn Great-Grandson, Xander Jon Ott, along with nieces and nephews. Iona was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Eldon Ott, her parents (Mary and Thorval Vamstad) and brother and sister-in-law (Kermit and Lucille Vamstad).
"Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. You will increase my honor and comfort me once again."
Funeral services will be held at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home 29 6th Avenue, New Glarus on Friday June 12th, 2015 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Tiff Bates officiating with burial at the Swiss Church Cemetery, following the ceremony.
