MONROE - A juvenile playing with a lighter started a house fire around 9 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of Seventh Street in Monroe.
Upon arrival, Assistant Fire Chief Ron Briggs spotted flames on the second floor of the two-story home. Initial attack crews contained the fire to the bedroom and extinguished it.
There was heavy smoke and heat damage to the second floor.
During investigation by the Monroe Fire and Monroe Police departments, it was found that a juvenile was playing with a lighter in the upstairs bedroom.
Deputy Chief Lane Heins reminded everyone Monday morning to not let children play with lighters or matches.
Any parent seeing a child playing with them can contact the Monroe Fire Department Prevention Bureau at 329-2570. There is information and resources available to assist in correcting the activity.
