Dorothy M. Firkins, age 97 of Monroe, formerly of Belvidere and Genoa, IL area, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Monroe Manor. She was born on August 22, 1916 in Sycamore, Illinois; the daughter of James and Lena (Tischler) Holmes. She graduated from Marengo, IL High School. Dorothy married Carlyle Firkins on December 28, 1937 in Genoa, IL. Dorothy and Carlyle moved to the Monroe area in 1969. She worked at Monroe Hospital in the housekeeping department for many years. She belonged to the Monroe United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Women of the Moose, chapter #599, she enjoyed playing cards, cooking, going out with her friends and spending time with her family.
She is survived by 3 daughters: Patricia (Bill) Paulson of Rockford, IL, Susan (Gary) Pinne of South Bend, IN and Carla (Keith) Walker of Brighton, MI; 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a daughter, Sharon Firkins.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 O'clock Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Shriner Hager Gohlke funeral home with Rev. Randy Booth officiating. Burial will be in Greewood cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m., until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established.
