FREEPORT — Police have charged a Freeport woman with reckless homicide following a New Year’s crash in which a 22-year-old man was killed while trying to cross a busy highway in Stephenson County.

Dominique Furcron, 29, was arrested at her Freeport home in the 500 block of North Brick Avenue without incident. She is charged with felony Reckless Homicide, failure to report an accident involving death, and reckless driving, authorities said.

Furcron was scheduled for first appearance on the charges during a Thursday video court hearing.

The crash happened just before 2:50 p.m. Dec. 30 on Business 20 West, just west of Lilly Creek Road, authorities said in a statement.  That’s where police reportedly found the victim, 22-year-old Kody Newman.

“During an ensuing investigation, it was determined that the decedent was a pedestrian who had been struck by a westbound vehicle,” police said. “The involved vehicle was found stopped alongside the roadway near Business 20 West near Harlem Center Road and the female driver, who is uninjured, is currently being detained while the investigation is being completed.”

Newman was a musician in a heavy metal band that played around the area, grieving friends said in published reports following the crash.

A number of area agencies responded to the crash, including Lena Police and Freeport Rural Fire Department.
