Herb Kohl foundation names winners of scholarship awards

MILWAUKEE - The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship Program announced the recipients of the 2014 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students and teachers.

The $1,000 awards are awarded to 100 teachers, their schools and 187 graduating high school students.

The 2014 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Excellence Scholars include: Dylan Johnson of Brodhead Senior High School, Darby Fitzsimons of Darlington High School and Julia Meyer of Pecatonica Area High School in Blanchardville.

The 2014 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Initiative Scholars include: Brandon Lengel of Juda High School, Tyson Young of Brodhead High School, Jena Foulker of Darlington High School and Kyle Van Bogaert of Belmont High School.

Excellence Scholarship recipients have demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond.

Initiative Scholarship recipients, chosen by their schools, have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond, but have not yet received other academic-based scholarships.

Regional recognition luncheons honoring the recipients will be held over a few weeks. Local award winners will be honored on Saturday, April 5 at Parker High School, Janesville.

The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl, a retired U.S. Senator, in 1990. To date, the foundation has awarded $8.6 million to Wisconsin educators, students and schools.
