FREEPORT — The Freeport Art Museum opened two exhibitions on Nov. 14. Insight/Incite presents the work of Fatherless, a collaborative print posse based in Rockford, Illinois. Showing nationally and internationally, they offer up a brand of Rust Belt Power Pop screen prints. This exhibition includes prints from the past decade and works responding to social upheaval beginning with the 2016 election.  Some of which have previously traveled to North Carolina, Chicago and New York in response to events in those cities. Their socially conscious and exuberantly colorful works feature images sourced from high and low culture. They desire to re-wire the viewer’s associations to such images as Kool-Aid Man and the Statue of Liberty. The collaborative process of passing the print from one artist to the next, each contributing image and color results in challenging images with acerbic wit commenting on today’s life and today’s issues.

The second floor Contemporary Gallery features an installation by Freeport Artist Melinda Cook. She has created this elaborate display with more than a decade of work consisting of paintings, sculptures, found objects and hoarded materials. This heavily layered installation of primarily abstract work focuses on bold color, organic form, and curious textures residing somewhere between a religious shrine and a trash heap for a rich and stimulating sensory experience.

Due to current COVID-19 concerns, there will be no opening receptions.

It is, however, quite safe to view this exhibit during regular museum hours. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 12 a.m. to 5 p.m. Schedule tours by calling 815-235-9755. Masks and social distancing are required.
