Canon: Help end Republican majority, elect Oemichen
letter to the editor stock

From Scott Canon

Belleville

To the Editor:

Homeowners in southern Wisconsin may have noticed that their property taxes have gone up in the last few years. In fact in 2025 property taxes in Wisconsin rose 7.8%. The roots of these tax increases lay with the Republican majority in the Legislature.

When Republicans took the majority in 2011, literally the first steps they took were to slash state aid for municipalities. Municipalities had no choice but to raise property taxes to cover expenses for basic services, like roads and public safety. The Republican majority in the Legislature have frozen state funding for Schools. School Districts have had to go to referendum to raise property levies all across the State to provide our children with a quality education.

Where did the money from the spending cuts go? All you have to do is ask yourself, have my property taxes gone up since 2011? Now ask yourself did my income taxes go down? The money the Republican majority have cut from our communities and school did not go in your pocket. It went to Millionaire donors to the Republican Party, and to corporate boondoggles like Foxconn.

It’s time for change in Wisconsin. It’s time to end the Republican majority. It’s time to send Bill Oemichen to the State Assembly.
