BARABOO - The Monroe boys tennis team swept all three doubles matches en route to a 6-1 win over Baraboo Thursday, April 25.

"It was nice to go on the road and get a win," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Baraboo was missing a few guys and is a little down from year's past, but our guys came out and played hard and played consistently."

Monroe seniors Kevin Kohlstedt and Josh Riese defeated Baraboo's Brett McCutchin and Joe Bruni 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Monroe's Jared Nix and Mark Jenson defeated Tanner Craker and Jacob Austin 6-1, 6-1. Monroe seniors Austin Lewey at No. 3 doubles defeated Jordan Veloso and Eli Andrew 6-3, 6-4.

"We swept doubles tonight and I'm hoping to see a lot more of that this season," Saugstad said. "The bad weather and limited court time has hurt us in doubles a lot more than in singles. We are starting to get some things figured out in doubles, and tonight was a good confidence boost for the boys."

Monroe senior Taylor Soddy at No. 1 singles defeated Andrew Hendricks 6-0, 6-0. Monroe sophomore Matt Monahan at No. 2 singles beat Zoryg Kusyk 6-0, 6-1.

"Taylor Soddy and Matt Monahan cruised at 1 and 2 singles," he said. "It was especially nice to see Matt play a solid match from start to finish. He was more relaxed tonight and was hitting a lot of nice shots."

At No. 4 singles, Monroe's Ellyott Baertschi defeated Austin Deich 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Monroe's Jeremy Miller at No. 3 singles lost to Andrew Paulson 6-3, 7-6 (4).

"Baertschi won because he moved his opponent around and played with a lot of consistency," Saugstad said. "Last year, Ellyott wouldn't have been as patient and probably would have lost this match. He's becoming a much smarter tennis player and it was great to see him get his first varsity win."
