MONROE - The Monroe varsity boys basketball team finished second place in the Monroe Summer Shootout, losing in the championship game to Pewaukee 50-33 on Sunday.

Monroe finished the tournament 4-1. Monroe opened the tournament in pool play beating Wisconsin Heights 60-50 and then rolled past Albany 57-37. Monroe then defeated Marshall 37-32 and knocked off Pecatonica in the semifinals to get to the championship.

"We have a lot of kids competing for playing time," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said. "It was good to get them in competition in games. It will come down to which guys can do it on a consistent basis."

In the second place tournament, Sauk Prairie beat Poynette 48-44 for the title. New Glarus edged Monticello 33-32 in the third place tournament.

"I thought for the most part they were unselfish," Murphy said. "You just hope to get better. That's the bottom line."

Sauk Prairie defeated Mount Horeb to win the junior varsity tournament on Saturday. The Monroe White JV team made it into the top seven teams, but lost in the quarterfinals to Stoughton. The Monroe Red team knocked off Pecatonica to win the second place JV tournament. Black Hawk defeated Verona to win the third place tournament.

Monroe will play in the Hononegah, Ill. Shootout July 6. Monroe will play Hononegah, Byron, Ill. and Burlington.

"Every time we get an opportunity to play, we want to compete and get better," Murphy said.
