MOUNT HOREB — Sugar River saw its season come to a close after a shootout loss to McFarland in a WIAA Division 3 regional final Oct. 23 at Mount Horeb High School.

Two days earlier the Raiders had blanked Mauston 5-0, but against McFarland neither team could find the net, running through two overtimes before the shootout commenced, with the Spartans scoring three times to Sugar River’s two.

Against Mauston, Ryan Hagen and Aiden Hatleberg each had two goals, and Carter Siegenthaler added a fifth. Hagen and Ryan Downing each had an assist, while Jack Leonard had two assists. Sugar River scored four goals in the first half and ran out the clock in the second to preserve a clean sheet.

Monroe, meanwhile, followed up its 9-0 drubbing of Prairie du Chien/Seneca/River Ridge with an 8-0 loss to top-seeded Evansville, which then squeaked into the sectional rounds with a 1-0 win over Edgerton Oct. 23.
