MARSHALL — The Sugar River track team traveled to Marshall for a Capitol meet on Monday, April 10, and the Raiders took the opportunity to show off their skills. The boys team finished in the top two in 17 of 21 events, while the girls finished in the top two in 11 of 18 events.
DJ Donnell won the 100- and 200-meter dash with times of 11.51 and 23.31 seconds, respectively. DeMarcus Conner trailed him in both events, taking third in the 100-meter dash (11.70 seconds) and second in the 200-meter dash (23.38 seconds). Conner also took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.84 seconds and won the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 8 inches.
Jonah Wortman finished first in all of his events. He finished the 100-meter wheelchair dash in 29.88 seconds, the 400-meter wheelchair dash in 2:03.91 and threw the shot put 13 feet.
In the distance events, Carter Scholey and Thomas Nelson went one and two. Nelson won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.66 and took second in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. Scholey won both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs with times of 4:50.02 and 10:20.68, respectively. He took second in the 800-meter run.
Jack Erickson had top finishes in both hurdle events, finishing first in the 300-meter hurdles (42.35 seconds) and second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.96 seconds). He also took second in the triple jump with a distance of 39-01.00.
In other jumps, Lawrence Vasquez and Cade Thayer made the top three. Lawrence won the high jump with a height of 6-00.00 and took second in the long jump with a leap of 18-10.75. Thayer took second in the high jump with a height of 5-10.00 and third in the long jump with a leap of 18-01.00.
The remaining top two finishes came from Andrew Sarbacker in the pole vault (second, 11-00.00) and the 4x800 relay (first, 11:06.04).
The Lady Raiders also had success, sweeping the first three spots in the 100-meter dash and high jump. Grace Atkinson led in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.76 seconds. Herioli Fraire finished sixth hundredths of a second later, followed by Grace Nommensen at 13.93 seconds.
In the high jump, Alex Atwell led with a height of 5-04.00. The Graces finished second and third — Atkinson second with a height of 4-10.00 and Nommensen third with a height of 4-08.00.
Frairie and Nommensen went one and two in the 200-meter dash with times of 27.80 and 28.43 seconds, respectively. The duo combined with Atwell and Atkinson in the 4x100 relay for first place (52.49 seconds).
Alora Spiegel represented Sugar River in the distance events, winning the 800-meter run (2:43.95) and taking second in the 1600-meter run (6:04.33). Ruthie Zuber and Ruth Marty went one and two in the 3200-meter run with times of 13:09.90 and 14:23.26, respectively.
The remaining top-two finishes came from Addison Disch in the 400-meter dash (second, 1:07.66), Addison Edge in the 300-meter hurdles (second, 55.58 seconds) and Steffi Dopp in the pole vault (second, 7-00.00).
