DELAVAN — The Cheesemaker boys tennis team improved to 11-1 on the season with three wins at the Delavan-Darien Quad on Friday, April 28.
Monroe opened with a 6-1 win over Whitewater. Gavin Eckerman won a three-set match at No. 3 singles, while Clayton Waski lost a three-set match at No. 4 singles.
“The biggest win came from Gavin Eckerman at No. 3 singles in a match we knew would be tight,” Monroe head coach Matt Bordner said. “Gavin played a really clean super tiebreak after dropping a tough second set, which will be big for his confidence.”
In match two, a 7-0 win over Jefferson, Bordner way able to play seniors Trey Wyss and Anthony Fuchs.
“We were able to plug Trey Wyss and Anthony Fuchs into our lineup, which was nice to reward a pair of seniors for their dedication to our program,” Bordner said.
The Cheesemakers ended the day with a 5-2 win over host Delavan-Darien. There were two, three-set matches that favored Monroe and a tiebreaker that also favored Monroe.
At the end of the day, Bordner reflected on the Cheesemakers’ start to the season, noting a special post-season ahead.
“All in all, it was big to walk out of this quad with as many wins as we did, as all three teams from this quad are in our subsectional,” Bordner said. “This is the strongest season we’ve had since I’ve started coaching and I’m proud of the way we battled all day.”
