MADISON — Darlington junior Leif Bredeson lost in the WIAA Division 3 heavyweight title match 2-1 to Stratford’s Dylan Schoenherr. The state tournament was held Feb. 21-23 at the Kohl Center.
Bredeson, ranked seventh after winning a sectional championship, finishes the year with a 37-6 record.
In the quarterfinal round, Bredeson pinned Winnebago Lutheran Academy’s Ryan Jacobs (41-7, ranked fourth) in 1:28. Later in the semifinals, Bredeson pinned Coleman’s Brock Martinson (38-6, No. 1) at 1:22.
Schoenherr (48-3, No. 3) also won both of his first two matches at state.
At 138 pounds, Darlington-Black Hawk senior Kolbe Ubersox finished fourth.
A four-year state qualifier, Ubersox (38-6), the WarBirds’ all-time pins and wins leader, lost in the quarterfinal 13-5 to Cumberland’s Reid Olson (44-4), who finished second. In the first round of the consolation bracket, Ubersox won a 9-3 decision over Stratford’s Jacob Heiden (31-11). In the consolation semifinals, Ubersox won a 12-2 major decision over Pittsville’s Beau Merritt (38-12).
Fennimore’s Trevor Wanek (34-15) then beat Ubersox in the third-place match 4-3. Ubersox had previously beaten Wanek in the sectional final the week before in overtime, as well as the third-place match at state a year ago, 7-6. Wanek also reached state all-four years of high school, medaling three times. Ubersox finishes his career with three medals in four state appearances — two thirds and a fifth.
Also wrestling at state in Division 3 was Pecatonica-Argyle’s Noah Krahenbuhl (26-5) and Easton Schraepfer (40-9).
Krahenbuhl, a sophomore, lost his only 120-pound match to Cedar Grove-Belgium’s Cael Erickson (43-5) by technical fall (2:40, 17-1).
Schraepfer, a junior, lost to Coleman’s Bryce Karban (41-10) in his lone match at 152-pounds.
Division 2
Brodhead-Juda’s Jackson Hauri spent the season as the top-ranked wrestler at 152-pounds. After qualifying for the state meet for the fourth year in a row, Hauri had one goal — the ever-elusive state title.
Hauri was the second-place finisher a season ago, losing to regional final foe Nolan Kicmol in the state championship. But in his quarterfinal match Feb. 22, Hauri (40-4) was stunned 9-5 by Tristan Massie (40-5) of Barron and forced into the consolation bracket.
Hauri then beat Ellsworth’s Sawyer Hamilton (38-10) by a 4-3 decision in the consolation quarterfinals, then won a 10-2 major decision over Grafton’s Ellis Pfleger (43-8). In the third-place match, Hauri again lost to Massie, this time 5-3 in sudden victory overtime.
Sugar River sent two wrestlers to the Kohl Center.
Sophomore Joe Quaglia (28-13) lost his opening round match to Baldwin-Woodville’s Jordan Bonto (40-5). It was Quaglia’s second trip to state in two years of high school wrestling.
Senior teammate Daniel Enloe (33-14) made an initial run into the semifinals, but finished sixth.
Enloe lost his first-round match over Tomahawk’s Tony Matti (39-12) by pin-fall at 5:04. In the quarterfinal, Enloe upset third-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran’s Isaiah Hahm by pin-fall in just 53 seconds. Top-ranked Logan Zschernitz (46-0) of Spencer-Columbus Catholic pinned Enloe in 31 seconds in the semifinal. Zschernitz then won the championship match by pin in the second period.
Enloe lost in the consolation semifinals 5-1 to Omro’s Mitchell Potratz, and then fell to Ellsworth’s Logan Peterson (44-7) in the fifth-place match by pin at 4:02.
