BOSCOBEL — A week after needing a last-minute play to get a conference-opening win, Black Hawk-Warren didn’t need any theatrics in walking past the Boscobel Bulldogs 54-9 on Friday, Sept. 13.

“I was proud of the boys and the win,” BHW head coach Desie Breadon said. “Owen Seffrood had some eye-popping stats. I was really happy to see everybody get a good amount of playing time and take advantage of the playing time they got.”

The win keeps the  fourth-ranked Warriors atop the Six Rivers Conference standings with top-ranked Potosi-Cassville and Iowa-Grant at 2-0.

Black Hawk-Warren’s defense pitched a 3-and-out on the first series of the game against Boscobel’s explosive offense, taking over on the Warriors’ 22-yard line. In just six runs, the Warriors covered 78 yards and the first touchdown and 2-point conversion of the game for Seffrood.

Boscobel answered right back, completing a 52-yard touchdown pass from Landon Haessly to returning all-conference wide receiver Cameron Loos, who was wearing a foam club on his left hand due to a dislocated finger. The conversion failed, and that was as close as Boscobel got to competing in the game.

The Warriors put up four more touchdowns in the first quarter — two by Seffrood, one by Piercen Mahoney, and one on a 74-yard pass from Eli Schliem to Beau Bredeson — to take a 38-6 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Black Hawk-Warren forced a running clock with two more rushing touchdowns by Seffrood, giving him five scores on the night. The halftime score was 54-6 Warriors. Boscobel kicked a 25-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final margin of 54-9.

Seffrood’s night included the five rushing touchdowns, four 2-point conversions, and 211 yards rushing on just nine carries — a 23.4 yard rushing average. Mahoney added 150 yards rushing on only seven carries — a 21.4 yard rushing average. As a team, Black Hawk-Warren ran for 437 yards at 13.7 yards per carry and added 82 yards passing on only two completions for a 519-yard offensive performance.

Seffrood also had an interception on defense, as did Beau Podnar.

Seffrood reached 732 yards rushing for the season in only four games, just past the halfway point to his 2023 performance of 1,462 yards. Seffrood also has 11 touchdowns this season rushing the ball after scoring 16 times a season ago.

This week, the Warriors will face Iowa-Grant in a battle for first place in the standings. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in Livingston at Iowa-Grant Schools.
