JANESVILLE — A 30-year-old inmate took their own life on Sept. 14, at the Rock County Jail, officials said.
“At approximately 8:42 p.m., a Correctional Officer at the Rock County Jail was conducting a routine security check and discovered an inmate hanging in his cell,” said Rock County Sheriff Curtis Fell in a statement Sept. 15. “The inmate was housed in a cell by himself. Additional officers and jail medical staff responded to the scene and immediately started life saving measures.”
Rock County Dispatch was notified, and Janesville Fire Department Paramedics responded along with the Rock County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau and the Rock County Medical Examiner Office. Paramedics took over advanced life-saving measures which were unsuccessful, officials said.
“The Rock County Medical Examiner staff are working with the Rock County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau to conduct the death investigation, which will be reviewed by staff from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, Office of Detention Facilities,” Fell said. “An investigation of this incident is continuing.”
The deceased is a 30-year-old from Beloit, who was taken into custody on April 18 on criminal charges and a probation violation.
An autopsy was to be conducted Monday, Sept. 16 in Madison at the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
