BELOIT - Monroe shortstop Scott Kline and the Monroe Junior Legion baseball team continued a flair for the dramatic on Wednesday. Kline lined a game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning to give Monroe a rousing 9-8 win over Janesville West in the first round of the Junior Legion region 6 tournament.
For the second straight night, Monroe (9-11) won a game in its last at-bat.
"We got behind, we just wouldn't quit," Monroe coach Bruce Rear said. "Now ... even when we are behind later in innings, we are thinking we can come back. We have proved it the last couple of nights."
Alex Dammen walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, before scoring the game-winning run.
Janesville West jumped out to an early lead with a four-run first off Monroe starter Mike Rear.
Kris Rieder came in and pitched five innings in relief and surrendered just one run on two hits. He struck out four and walked three.
Monroe battled back from 6-2 and 8-4 deficits.
The Janesville West pitcher fought control issues all night, hitting seven batters.
Monroe rallied wity a four-run sixth to tie the score at 8-8. The big hits were Cory Kundert's two-run single and Kline's two-out game-tying RBI double.
Kline was an offensive catalyst, reaching base in five of six at-bats (2-for-3, twice hit by a pitch, one walk).
"When he gets on base, we go," Rear said. "Scott was just on tonight. He was really intense."
Others from Monroe with multi-hit games included Taylor Weckerly (2-for-4 with two runs) and Mike Demianiuk.
Monroe next plays the winner of tonight's Elkhorn-Union Grove game at 7:45 p.m. Friday.
