Betty Jean Karlen, age 86, of Monroe passed away on October 16, 2018 at The Monroe Clinic Hospice Home. Betty was born on March 27, 1932 the daughter of Palmer and Elsie (Siedschlag) Wahler. She was a graduate of South Wayne High School in 1950, as well as the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Freeport in 1953. Betty was united in marriage to Royal F. Karlen on August 12, 1995.

 

Betty started her nursing career at the Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia, OH. She later worked at the St. Clare Hospital, now Monroe Clinic Hospital, for 35 years; retiring in 1997. She enjoyed volunteer work, having given 5,800 hours to the Monroe Clinic Volunteers in Partnership, serving on the Scholarship Committee and helping run the gift shop, as well as the Luminary Committee for Green County Relay for Life for 12 years,. She also gave her time to the Apostolate to the Handicapped; both in Monroe and the Wisconsin Dells. Betty was also a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant for 40 years. She was an avid Badger basketball fan and loved to travel. She had been a longtime member of the Monroe United Methodist Church.

 

Betty is survived by her husband, Royal; children, Stephanie (Thomas) Seubert of Minnetonka, MN, Kelli Pinnow of Orangeville, Steven Pinnow of Orangeville, and Wendy (Curt Blankenhagen) Ellingson of Monroe; step-children, Kay (James) Doyle and Gerald (Sheila) Karlen; grandchildren, Stephen Seubert, Amy (Eric) Dawson, Heidi (Matthew) Reeter, Christopher (Sommer) Auer, Cory (Haley) Auer, and Ryan, Rachel, and Joshua Ellingson; step-grandchildren, Patrick (Katie Sturdevant) Doyle, Tawni (Lee) Kobielak and Brianna Karlen; 8 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by dear family members, Jaime (Mia) Pinnow and their four children; and sisters, Dorothy Miller, and, Mary Quanbeck.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Marjorie and David Brinkmeier and Virginia and Lucas Dischler; brother, Kenneth Wahler, grandson, Scott Auer; and brothers-in-law, Charles Miller and Kermit Quanbeck.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, October 22, 2018 at the Monroe United Methodist Church with Pastor Randy Booth officiating.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 2:00-5:00PM at SHRINER HAGER GOHLKE Funeral Home; and also on Monday from 10:00AM until the time of service at the church. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in South Wayne.
