The above cheese press hand-carved in Switzerland from pine, oak and spruce woods was shipped via a sailing ship to Boston in the early 1830s. There it was reloaded on another sailing vessel and sent around the horn, reaching northern California in the early phase of the gold rush. John Sutter of Swiss decent, then located on the Sacramento River and later Fort Sutter, had large ranch holdings. It is said that this press was used by him at his various cheese factories. It was finally acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum and is now displayed at the Los Angeles County and State Arboreta and Botanical Gardens in Arcadia, California.
