BRODHEAD - Ruth Marie Meyers, loving mother, grandmother, and friend, age 78, passed away peacefully May 5, 2012 at Mercy Hospital, Janesville. She was born July 29, 1933 in Green County, WI to Jakob and Martha Hess Kummer. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1951. Ruth married Stanley Meyers on August 30, 1953 in Monroe, WI at St. John's United Church of Christ. They settled in Brodhead in 1956 from the Monroe area where they had been engaged in farming. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1990. Ruth was a homemaker and devoted mother for many years before going back to school and earning her associate degree in Early Childhood from Blackhawk Technical College. Ruth then taught pre-school and served as pre-school teacher/director in both Brodhead and Albany positively impacting the lives of many area children. She was an avid bowler in several leagues and served numerous positions in the local bowling associations throughout the years. For her years of dedication and service Ruth was inducted into the Brodhead/Albany WBA Bowling Hall of Fame in 2002. She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Brodhead. At church she taught Sunday School, was active in the Ruth Circle, the Women's Guild, and served as a member of church council. Much to the surprise of her children, Ruth became a committed Green Bay Packer fan in her later years. Survivors include three sons Michael (Dawn), Hermiston, OR; Steven (Mary Jo), Rockford, IL; and Richard, Rosholt, WI; two daughters Cynthia (Glen) Boedecker, Woodbury, MN; Christine (Stefan) Fabian, Wrightstown, WI; and an AFS daughter Leen (Marc) Geerkens- Cornil, Brussels, Belgium; seven grandchildren Scott (Vicki) Meyers, Christopher (Christine) Meyers, Elizabeth (Ryan) Clausen, Michaela, Trevor, Carson, and Kamryn Fabian; one step-grandchild Elizabeth Mertz; two AFS grandchildren Remi and Manu Geerkens; two great grandchildren Phineas Meyers and Jacob Clausen; three brothers Jacob Kummer, Charles City, Iowa, James (Connie) Kummer, Cazenovia, WI, William (Kay) Kummer, New Glarus; two sisters Martha Jenkins, Racine, WI; Jeanne (Bruce) Pope, Richland Center, WI. She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley, parents, and a sister. A visitation will be held from 5 until 7 pm, Wednesday May 9, 2012 at the D.L. Newcomer Funeral Home, 1105 E. 9th Ave. Brodhead, WI. Funeral services will be at 11 am on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at The Congregational UCC, 204 E. 23rd. St., Brodhead, WI. A memorial fund will be established.
