John F. Dahmen age 88 of Monroe died on Friday, February 15, 2013 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on October 22, 1924 in Ashton, Wisconsin the son of Joseph and Regina (Grosse) Dahmen. John was a 1942 graduate of Middleton High School. John and Rosella (Adler) were married on August 13, 1946 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Middleton.
John started in the dairy industry at Madison Milk Producers (Head Cheesemaker) before purchasing the Stuart Cheese Factory, then joined the WDATCP as a field inspector before purchasing the Mayer Cheese Company, and was a cheese grader for Dorman Cheese Co. In later years he ran a sample route for Foreign Type Cheese Lab, was a field representative for Kolb-Lena Cheese Co., cheese grader for numerous county & state competitions, and won numerous awards at local & state contests.
He was a well known figure at Black Hawk sporting events, running the clock for football & basketball for 35 years and enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete in many of their events. After moving to Monroe he was a regular Booster of Monroe and all local sports. He was also known as a longtime umpire coordinating local community leagues and tournaments.
He is survived by wife Rosella Dahmen of Monroe; sons, James (Susan) and Thomas (Donna) Dahmen both of Monroe; daughters, Barbara (Steve) Jackson of Blanchardville; Jeanne (James) Ruf of Monroe; sisters, Lorena Gordon and Dolores Shiveler both of Madison; Mary Hanlon of Bella Vista, AK; grandchildren: Cory (Marcia) Dahmen, Ryan (Lindsay) Dahmen, Andrea (Greg) Garvens, Kip and Nikki Jackson, Stacy (Curt) Smits, Trisha Ruf, Megan (Joe Olson) Ruf, Brad (Ashley) Smith, Joe and Chris Dahmen, great-grandchildren: Keegan, Kennedy and Drake Dahmen, Nathan Olson, McKayla Smith and one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Al, twin brother James, and sister Claire Dee.
John was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish in Monroe. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church with Fr. Larry Bakke Celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
A visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Dr. and 18th Ave. in Monroe. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in John's memory.
