Elvira M. Cuevas age 87 of Monroe, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. Elvira was born March 3, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Luis and Julia (Arriola) Cortez. She graduated from high school in Chicago and married Jack Cuevas Sr. on May 6, 1950 in Crown Point, Indiana. He preceded her in death on July 25, 2009. Elvira worked as a secretary for the Illinois Migrant Council for 25 years. She and her husband lived in McHenry, IL from 1960 until moving to Twining Valley Retirement Community, Monroe, in 2007.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in McHenry for many years and St. Victor Catholic Church in Monroe since 2007.

She enjoyed visiting and playing cards with her friends at Twining Valley.

Elvira is survived by a son, Jack (Wendy) Cuevas Jr. of Monroe; and two grandsons, Shawn Cuevas of Middleton, WI and Jason Cuevas of Madison, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Lupe Sotelo and Hortence Higareda.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at 12:00 p.m., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, with Father Michael Klarer officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe.
