BELLEVILLE - Delbert L. Duerst, age 88, of Belleville, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the New Glarus Home. He was born on March 23, 1921 to Leon and Martha (Theiler) Duerst at rural New Glarus. Delbert attended the Meadow Valley School and graduated from New Glarus High School. On July 26, 1940 he was united in marriage to Nellie Pfund at the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus. Delbert farmed in the Town of Exeter for his entire life. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Belleville. Delbert enjoyed playing cards, fixing machinery, and mowing and maintaining the lawn around their farm. Following his retirement from farming Delbert and Nellie enjoyed traveling and camping across the country.
Delbert is survived by his wife, Nellie; a son, Ron (Bette) Duerst of Madison, WI; a daughter, Renae (Bob) Hanson of Brooklyn, WI; four grandchildren: Todd (Tina) Hanson, Terri (Mike) Carnell, Andrea (Scott) Pollen, and Alan (Heidi) Duerst; and 10 great-grandchildren: Antwaun, Karac, Travis, Mason, Tyler, Emily, Anthony, Julianna, Janson, and Jessica.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lucille Elmer; father-in-law, Albert Pfund and mother-in-law, Emma Pfund.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 14, 2009 at the First United Church of Christ, 130 E. Church St., Belleville, WI with the Rev. Heide Walker-Hackman officiating with burial in the Swiss Church Cemetery, New Glarus.
Relatives and friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2009, at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home, 109 Greenway Cross, Belleville, WI.
