Arvilla May Smith, age 94 of Monroe, died Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Pleasant View Nursing Home.

Arvilla was born November 25, 1916 in Galesville, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin , the daughter of Duncan and Henrietta (Lowener) Grant.

She married James Smith on August 25, 1937 in Winona, MN.

They farmed in the Galesville area and Arvilla worked for the dry cleaners in Galesville and Winona. They moved to Monroe in 1969. Arvilla was employed at a launderette in Monroe and was a seasonal worker at the Swiss Colony before retiring at the age of 82. She enjoyed needlework, sewing, walking, and word search puzzles.

Survivors include three daughters, Darlene Flannery of Janesville, Wanda (Hans) Masshardt of Monroe, Doris (George) Mathis of Rockford, IL; nine grandchildren, Neil (Trish) Flannery, Troy (Melissa) Flannery, Cindy Zimmer and fiance Bruce Sanders, George Mathis, Scott (Renee) Mathis, Brian (Yuka) Masshardt, Tami (Wally) Vroman, Todd (Cheri) Masshardt, and Timothy (Melissa) Masshardt; eighteen great grandchildren, Erica and Charles Zimmer, Tristan, Cody, and Hope Mathis, Andrew and Carter Flannery, Emilie Denko, Luke Flannery, Kylie, TaeLynne, and Isaiah Masshardt, Zamara and Zachary Vroman, Leo and Mana Masshardt, and Avery and Davis Masshardt; and a sister-in-law, Vivienne Grant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Smith; daughter, Phyllis Smith; son-in-law, DeWayne Flannery; brothers, Thomas (Jesse) and Russell Grant; and a sister, Helen (Raymond) Schmidt.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at the Union Presbyterian Church, Monroe, with Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sandin-Ross officiating. Burial will be in Green Mound Cemetery, Holmen, WI at a later date. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
