Albert R. Schmidt age 84 of Monroe, Wisconsin died Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born July 13, 1926 to Albert O. and Henrietta (Crombie) Schmidt in Indianapolis, Indiana. Albert enlisted in the Army Air Corp Reserve in January 1943, served as a cryptographer technician with the 141st A.A.C.S. Squadron in the Philippine Islands during WWII, received the American Theater Ribbon & Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, and was discharged December 1946. After discharge Al completed the Dairy Short Course at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He worked many years for the N. Dorman Cheese Co. in Monroe as Food Machine Maintenance Supervisor and Engineering from which he retired March 1989.

Albert married Rose Marie Walters February 12, 1950 at the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Monroe, the first couple to be married in that church. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Al was well known for his knowledge of Indian Archeology and his large collection of Indian Artifacts. He spent several summers working at the Gottschall dig at Muscoda, WI under the auspices of Beloit College and Professor Robert Sulzer. He was a member of several archeology societies, Zilmer Riley American Legion Post #84, and Cecil Jones VFW Post #2312. He was a member and Past Master of Smith Masonic Lodge #31.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Schmidt of Monroe; daughters, Barbara Ann French of Monroe, Debra Jean Schmidt of Fitchburg, & Karla May Schmidt of Monroe; grandson, Shane French; great-grandson, Harley French of South Wayne and brother, Robert Schmidt of Loves Park, IL. He was preceded in death by his Parents and great-granddaughter, Savanah Marie French.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home 1455 Mansion Drive & N. 18th Avenue in Monroe with Rev. Gretchen Sylvester officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe.

Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. to time of service at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
