DARLINGTON - A Darlington man was sentenced to seven days in jail and three years on probation for his part in the theft of a lawnmower and trailer, along with forgery.

Andrew J. Turpin, 21, pleaded no contest to two Class H felony counts of forgery. Three other Class H felony counts of forgery were dismissed.

According to the criminal complaint, between July 25 to 30, Turpin used checks that did not belong to him to write a total of $612.62 for purchases from the New Horizons Supply Cooperation in Darlington.

In a separate case, Turpin pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor counts of altering identity marks. Two Class I felony counts of receiving stolen property were dismissed.

The case stems from an incident on May 23 when Shullsburg police received an anonymous tip that Chad D. Knauer, 32, Shullsburg, was in possession of a stolen lawnmower and snowmobile trailer. A search of his residence turned up a John Deere Model X475 lawnmower belonging to CGM Small Engine Repair and Sales in Monroe and a snowmobile trailer belonging to M. Schettl Sales Inc. in Oshkosh. Knauer told police he and Turpin both stole items earlier in the year.

Knauer was sentenced to three years on probation Jan. 29.

Turpin is ordered to pay restitution to M. Schettl Sales Inc. in the amount of $200, along with court costs.
