MONROE — For many families, the holidays are about more than preparing a meal. They are about gathering with loved ones, carrying on family traditions, and creating memories through recipes that have been shared for generations.
Again, this year, SSM Health Monroe Hospital is helping make those traditions possible for more local families through a $2,500 contribution to the Baker’s Dozen Fund.
Founded by Rick and Nancy Maliszewski, the Baker’s Dozen Fund supports the purchase of baking ingredients and supplies that are distributed through six food pantries serving Green County. The program provides items such as flour, sugar, butter, spices and other baking essentials, allowing families to enjoy the traditions and comfort of holiday baking.
This year, Baker’s Dozen will serve 492 food-insecure families, an increase from the 470 families served last year. Baker’s Dozen has also seen rising costs, with this year’s expenses already approximately $2,000 higher than last year’s effort. The estimated budget for 2026 is $20,000.
“It feels good to help families enabled to enjoy a holiday tradition,” said Rick.
While many food assistance programs focus on everyday necessities, Baker’s Dozen fills a unique need by helping families celebrate and participate in traditions that make the holiday season special.
SSM Health’s support reflects its commitment to addressing food insecurity, one of the social drives of health that can significantly impact overall well-being.
“Food insecurity affects more than what’s on the dinner table. It can impact a family’s overall well-being and ability to fully participate in important traditions,” shared Rachel Meier, Community Health Specialist at SSM Health Monroe Hospital. “We’re proud to support the Baker’s Dozen Fund because it not only helps address food insecurity, but also brings comfort, connection, and joy to local families.”
Community members interested in supporting the effort can donate to the Baker’s Dozen Fund through the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin. Every dollar contributed goes directly toward purchasing baking ingredients and supplies for local families.
