GCGS offers help with Ancestry.com

MONROE — On Sept. 15, Green County Genealogical Society will host a Friday Fun Day, which will include offering help navigating Ancestry.com. Those that have been considering a subscription to Ancestry.com but have questions about it, or those that have a subscription but want to be more effective at using everything that is available can learn more. 

Ginny Gerber will present an overview of Ancestry and answer specific questions that are asked.

Family Fun Day will meet at the Research Center, located on the lower level of the Monroe Public Library, from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.

 Visitors are welcome and there is no cost to attend. For questions, call Ginny at 608-426-1796 or Donna at 608-921-1537. The GCGS Research Center is available to the public for research each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other times are available by appointment by calling 608-325-7436 on Tuesday, or Bill at 608-325-2990.


Sons of Norway to meet Sept. 14

MONROE — The Monroe Sons of Norway Ostestaden Lodge will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Union Presbyterian Church Community Room in Monroe. 

This will be a special meeting as members will get to peek into a Norwegian Trunk full of Norse artifacts that have been collected to tell the story of Norwegian history in the United States. This trunk has been traveling from lodge to lodge around the state. Each article in the trunk will have a story connected to it which will be shared by members.

 Thursday will be the chance to see “what is in the trunk” and to share stories about these items from Scandinavian past. Guests are welcome to join in celebrate common local history and heritage.


Democratic Party of Green County to meet Sept. 14

MONROE — The Democratic Party of Green County will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Community Kitchen Coop, 209 Main Street, Monticello. 

Social gathering at 5:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. and will include a discussion of fair legislative maps. All are welcome.


In-person job fair Sept. 19

JANESVILLE — An in-person job fair will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the Rock County Job Center located at 1717 Center Avenue in Janesville. 

The event will host 29 local employers from all industries in Rock and surrounding counties with 400-plus reported job openings.

Rep. Anderson appointed to Speaker’s Task Force on A.I.

MADISON — On Thursday, Aug. 31, Rep. Clinton Anderson was appointed to the Speaker’s Task Force on Artificial Intelligence. 

“A.I. has the capacity to change many aspects of our lives, and our laws need to keep up,” said Rep. Clinton Anderson in a statement. This task force has the ability to start asking the important questions of how do we regulate A.I. responsibly.”


First Peoples’ Celebration in Argyle

ARGYLE — A free community event will be held from 12-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23 behind the Saxton House, 204 N. State Street in Argyle.

Those in attendance will explore the history and topography of the area and tour the grounds and boyhood home of Robert M. LaFollette.

At 1 p.m., Robert Boszhardt, an archaeologist who has worked in the upper Mississippi Valley, will speak on the prehistory and artifacts of the indigenous people of the Driftless area.

At 2:30 p.m., Janice Rice, a member of Ho-Chunk Nation will present a program called “Walk with Me Among My Homelands: Hear the Echoes of My Ancestors”.

Guests can enjoy the afternoon of speakers, vendors, food truck and more.


Presentation of ‘Albany Beer War of 1894’

ALBANY — The Albany Historical Society will present the program “Albany Beer War of 1894” at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the Albertson Memorial Public Library, 200 North Water Street.

The program will be presented by Rock County’s Historical Breweries,Bars, and Saloons.

On August 7 1894, a Janesville brewer by the name of N.B. Robinson attempted to collect an outstanding debt of $178.50 from Albany resident William Hahn by taking possession of his stock of bottled beer. The ensuing battle between Hahn’s men and law enforcement would go down in history as the “Albany Beer War”.
