The Green County Goat Project is open to any 4-H and FFA member interested in having goats as their project. Pictured is 15-year-old Shad Hanson, Juda, holding his goat, Sphera, that he showed at the 2013 Green County Fair; 6-year-old Alayna Fiez, who will be a Cloverbud this year; and Dylan Fiez, 2, both of Monroe. MONROE - A new program in the area is allowing 4-H and FFA members to show and care for goats.

Over the past few years, goats in Wisconsin have become increasingly popular in the milking industry. Due to the rise in popularity, area breeders have also started to increase in numbers to supply the growing demand for milking goats.

The new Green County Goat project will introduce a managerial goat contract available to all 4-H/FFA members in the county wanting to get involved in the project but do not have the access to a goat or the housing to keep them.

Goats will be available to anyone, whether they live in the city or country, who have an interest and desire to show them at the fair. There are several breeders in the area - from the smallest breeds, like the Nigerian dwarf and pygmies, to the larger of the breeds, like Nubian and Saanens - that are obtainable without the cost of ownership.

For more information on the project, contact Ron or Kelly Gordee at N4711 Jordan Center Road, Argyle, or mlknhny@tds.net. For more information on Green County 4-H Clubs, visit green.uwex.edu or contact Alissa Grenawalt, Green County 4-H and Youth Development Agent, at alissa.grenawalt@ces.uwex.edu.
