Wildcats muzzled in semifinals

MCFARLAND — The Belleville Wildcats set a lot of first this season — including winning the school’s playoff football game in school history. With each victory the fourth-seeded Wildcats pulled off was another step closer to glory at Camp Randall Stadium.

Except in the Nov. 12 WIAA Division 5 Level 4 game against Mayville at McFarland, the Wildcats came up short, getting outscored by two touchdowns in the second half and losing 42-25. 

Mayville led 14-7 after the first quarter, but Belleville trimmed it to 21-19 by halftime. Mayville then scored one touchdown in the third quarter, and two more in the fourth, while the Wildcats scored just one fourth quarter touchdown.

Trevor Syse was 18 of 25 passing for 241 yards and a touchdown, plus catching a 40-yard TD pass. Carson Syse added 112 yards passing with two scores, plus another 125 yards on five catches with a TD. Dylan Posthuma had 67 yards on the ground with a score. Anthony Nolden had two catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Mayville road to Madison on the curtails of Blake Schraufnagel, who had 270 yards rushing on 43 totes with six touchdowns. The 6-1, 180-pound junior has 2,216 yards and 37 TD this season. 

In the state championship, scheduled for Nov. 18, Mayville will face Aquinas, which defeated Wittenberg-Birnamwood 28-18.
