Portage sweeps Monroe, M-A, NG, B-J all fall

PORTAGE — The Cheesemakers were swept by Portage in a Badger Conference crossover doubleheader April 6. Monroe lost the first game 10-2, and then fell 7-1 in the second game.

Monroe committed six errors on the day and had just eight hits on offense. Tyler Matley was the only Cheesemaker with multiple hits, going 3 for 7 on the day with two doubles in the second game. Payton Sawdey, Payton Stauffacher and Trevor Meier each had an RBI. Stauffacher had a double in the first contest.

In the opener, Max Lange lasted three innings on the mound, allowing seven runs — just four earned — on five hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts. Max Golembiewski tossed 2.1 innings in relief, allowing three runs to cross the plate on four walks and two hits, including a home run to Austin Stensrud in the fifth inning. Zach Ripp got the final two outs in the bottom of the sixth for Monroe.

The big inning for Portage was the second inning, in which the Warriors plated seven runners. Monroe’s defense committed two errors in the frame.

In Game 2, Meier allowed three runs in three innings on the hill, with Henry Brukwicki tossing two scoreless frames. Jared Baumgartner pitched one inning of scoreless baseball, and Jared Cline’s lone inning on the hill saw four unearned runs cross the plate.

Portage scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth. Monroe’s only run came in the bottom of the seventh.


Highland 5, Monticello-Albany 3

MONTICELLO — The Ponies were swept by the Cardinals in a Six Rivers crossover doubleheader April 5.

A slew of errors allowed seven unearned runs to score in Game 1. 

Corbin Kelley took the loss on the mound, throwing 95 pitches in five innings, allowing seven runs — three earned — and a walk to go with five strikeouts. Andrew Eyler allowed seven runs on 10 hits and five walks in 1.1 innings of relief, while Tyler Anderson allowed one unearned run to cross the plate in the final 2/3s of the seventh inning.

Game 2 was called after four innings after Highland scored four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Highland’s Drew Hennessey was 7 for 8 with three home runs, seven RBIs and six runs from the leadoff spot in the twinbill.

Kollin Klitzke pitched the full 3.2 innings for Monticello-Albany, allowing just one earned run on three hits and two walks. He struck out seven batters.


Waterloo 6, New Glarus 4

WATEROO — Peyton Mendleski started on the mound for the Glarner Knights April 4, giving up two unearned runs in three innings while striking out five and allowing four hits and two walks. Reeve Binger took the loss in relief, allowed three runs in 1.1 innings, while Carter Siegenthaler gave up an unearned run in 1.2 innings of work for New Glarus.

The Knights committed six errors in the field and scored two runs in both the third and seventh innings. Waterloo scored two in the third, three in the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth.

Cooper Dreyfus was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs for New Glarus, while Binger was 2 for 3 with a double. Darris Schuett scored two runs.


Big Foot 7, Brodhead-Juda 6

WALWORTH — Quinton Kammerer was 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs, teammate Payton Johnson was 3 for 3 and Marco Bueno was 2 for 3, but the Cardinals lost a nail-biter to the Chiefs April 4.

Kammerer started on the mound and gave up six runs in five-plus innings, walking six and allowing five hits. He struck out one. Cade Walker closed out the sixth inning, allowing one unearned run to score.

A four-run fifth put the Chiefs up 5-2 on Brodhead-Juda, but the Cardinals scored three in the top half of the sixth to even the score. Big Foot responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the Cardinals could only claw back another run in the seventh.
