SAUK CITY — The Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team competed in an all-relay conference meet, finishing seventh out of nine teams. The Cheese Knights finished just eight points behind sixth place in a competitive field.

Monroe-New Glarus had 11 swimmers compete at the meet, making the team one of the smaller programs in the conference. Fort Atkinson and Stoughton had team sizes more comparable to Monroe-New Glarus, while the top three teams had 18 to more than 20 swimmers. The larger teams were able to fill both A and B relay spots and featured many swimmers with club swimming and additional competitive swimming experience.

With a smaller roster and several swimmers who are newer to competitive swimming, the Cheese Knights continued to make impressive strides. The team has already shown significant improvement compared to this point last season and continued that progress from the previous meet at DeForest.

“The girls have demonstrated strong effort, teamwork, and a commitment to improving throughout the early part of the season,” said head coach Rachel Root.

Monroe-New Glarus recorded its highest relay finish in the 4x100 IM, placing third. The relay team consisted of Hadleigh Shunk, Lauren Zentner, Lauryn Arnett and Kennedy Sysko.

Several swimmers also posted individual highlights during the meet. Lauryn Arnett recorded a personal-best time in the anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay, while Emma Funk dropped a full second from her 50 freestyle time from the previous weekend.

The Cheese Knights continue to gain valuable racing experience while making improvements at each meet.

“With the progress the team has already made, there is plenty to be excited about as the girls continue to build confidence, improve their times, and work toward their goals throughout the remainder of the season,” Root said.
