BRAMPTON, Canada — Orangeville-native and National Rookie of the Year Tessa Janecke scored her first professional goal in USA’s 6-2 win over Czechia on Sunday, April 9. Janecke’s goal was part of a two-goal period by the U.S., which put them up 4-0 after two full periods.
Abbey Murphy got the action started in the first, drawing two defenders on a breakaway. It left Megan Keller wide open, as she snuck the puck through Czech goalie Blanka Skodova’s five-hole.
Denisa Krizova tied the game at one with a powerplay goal. Five minutes later, Czech took its only lead of the game with an unassisted goal from Sara Cajanova. The teams ended the period tied at two after a goal from Hayley Scamurra.
Forty-five seconds into the second period, USA reclaimed the lead with an unassisted goal from Lacey Eden. The Americans then committed two penalties, one on Janecke for an illegal check. She responded quickly, scoring her first professional goal minutes later. She fought for position in front of the net and got a pass from Taylor Heise. Janecke batted it out of the air and put it past Skodova.
Hillary Knight and Abby Roque added two more goals in the third to seal the win.
In the Americans’ 9-1 win over Switzerland on Friday, April 7, Janecke assisted Caroline Harvey in the third period.
