MONROE — Sydney Hilliard capped her stunning prep basketball career with a second-place finish at state, as well as being named unanimous all-state and all-conference in the process.
Hilliard, a Wisconsin commit, finished her career with 1,991 points in 102 games (19.5 points per game average). In her senior season she averaged 21.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 3.5 assists per game. She is Monroe’s all-time leading scorer and finished fourth in career rebounds with 692. Hilliard was a three-time unanimous all-state selection.
On March 11, the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association released its annual all-state teams, and Hilliard, Beaver Dam’s Tara Stauffacher and Maty Wilke, Luxemburg-Casco’s Cassie Schlitz and Monona Grove’s McKenna Warnock were all unanimous first-team selections. Ten players in all received first-team selections, and 11 were honorable mention. Warnock was named the state’s Miss Basketball March 9.
In the Badger South Conference, Hilliard and Warnock were unanimous selections, and Monroe senior Emily Benzschawel and sophomore Megan Benzschawel were both first-team sectionals. Grace Tostrud was honorable mention.
Emily Benzschawel averaged 12.3 ppg this season, while Megan Benzschawel was at 10.9. Tostrud averaged 7.4 points and hit a team-high 39 3-pointers.
