Cards trounce RC, face Belleville next

BRODHEAD – The Cardinals rumbled their way to Level 3 of the WIAA Division 5 football playoffs with a rousing 42-3 win over Richland Center Oct. 29.

The Cardinals out-gained the Hornets 371-124 in yardage and had 17 first downs to Richland Center’s six.

Leading the way yet again was stud senior running back Gage Boegli, who had 162 yards and two TDs on just 14 carries. Brady Rosheisen and Ayden Vondra had 67 combined yards on the ground. Brodhead-Juda QB Cole Hoesly was 7 of 10 passing for 121 yards and four scores. Brady Malkow had two catches, both for touchdowns, and 35 yards. Gunner Boegli had 58 yards two catches with a 51-yard score, and Vondra had two catches for seven yards with a score.

The Cardinals led 7-0 after the first quarter and 21-3 at halftime. Gage Boegli had a 69-yard TD run to open the third quarter, making it a four-touchdown game. Brodhead-Juda scored once more in the third quarter, and with 10:15 left in regulation scored one last time to turn on the running clock.

Up next for the Cardinals (11-0) is Belleville (9-2). 

The Wildcats run a spread option offense, utilizing the playmaking ability of senior QB Trevor Syse. Belleville has gained nearly 2,200 yards through the air this fall, plus another nearly 1,700 yards on the ground. Syse has thrown for 1,800 yards and run for another 466, with 39 total touchdowns. Dylan Posthuma is the team’s biggest rushing threat, averaging 8.7 yards per carry with 845 total rushing yards this season. Anthony Nolden leads Belleville in both receptions (34), yards (789) and receiving TDs (10). Belleville has outscored opponents 424-146.

Brodhead-Juda, meanwhile, holds a 421-75 advantage in the scoring department this campaign, with just under 700 yards passing and 3,000-plus rushing. Boegli leads the way on offense with 1,298 rushing yards and 24 TDs on just 98 carries. Rosheisen has 626 yards on 101 touches. 

The game is set for 7 p.m. in Brodhead.
