MONROE — Monroe track and field held its annual Glendenning Invite on Monday, April 8. Although Platteville won both boys and girls divisions, the Cheesemakers still broke the boys 4x100 relay record and Aleigh Zettle tied the pole vault record. Kaden Kuester was also just 0.01 second off of the 110-meter hurdle record.
“The success comes from not only our depth but our quality of depth and how well-rounded we are as a program,” Monroe boys head coach Scott Mosher said.
The previous boys 4x100 relay record was set just last year by Black Hawk’s squad of Jovanny Erickson, Andrew Figi, Lucas Milz and Teegan Sweeney. Monroe’s Jy’ Shon Broitzman, Brody Cornfield, Seth Schmidt and Noah Spotts bested the record by nearly 0.2 seconds. Knowing that the Warrior’s 4x100 relay qualified for the Division 3 state meet and that Monroe was split into two teams, Mosher speculated what the time could have been and what’s in store for the future.
“The relays also were a bright spot,” he said. “Knowing we have a handful of athletes on the other team (Monroe Red) it makes me wonder if we could have gone faster.”
Similarly, Kuester’s performance in the 110-meter hurdles was comparable to Monroe-graduate Jason Carpenter’s record, set in 2022. That year, Carpenter took 10th at the state meet. Last season, Kuester was two spots shy of qualifying for the 110-meter hurdle finals at state.
Zettle used her PR in the 100-meter hurdles as motivation for the rest of the meet, tying the pole vault record (9-06) set by Monroe’s Josie Eberle in 2017. Although she vaulted 10-00 at the indoor state track meet the Saturday previous, Zettle continues to take it one meet at a time.
“Even though I wasn’t happy with my pole vault height, I’m going to continue to work really hard to reach my goals for vaulting by the end of the season.”
With the positive team results, spectators may not have noticed the Cheesemakers’ strategy was different that years past. Traditionally, the Glendenning Invite is an opportunity for all Cheesemaker athletes to compete in multiple events, and Monroe splits its team into two or three different squads. This year, though, Monroe had a more important competition on the horizon — a double dual with East Troy and Jefferson that counted toward the Rock Valley Conference title.
“Focusing on beating East Troy and Jefferson while still ensuring athletes have the chance to compete at home and take advantage of the great weather was a tough balancing act,” Monroe girls head coach Eric Jubeck said.
